This handmade cut coin pendant was made from a US nickel that I call the New Buffalo nickel.
These coins had the buffalo on the reverse side and Thomas Jefferson in profile on the obverse.
They were minted in 2005 and were part of the Westward Journey Nickel series created by the
US Mint from 2004 until 2006. They are of course reminiscent of the original Buffalo nickels,
but on these coins the buffalo is facing in the opposite direction.
This nickel, like all nickels minted by the US since shortly after the Civil War, is made of an alloy
of 25% nickel and 75% copper. The article on these nickels in Wikipedia states that as of March
2011 the value of the metal in each coin is 6.6 cents. Given the general trends that metal prices
tend to increase and the value of the dollar tends to decrease, it is likely that at some point in the
not too distant future the composition of five cent US coins will be changed. Will we still call them
nickels?
But for now they are still nickels, and this nickel, like all my other cut coins, is covered by my
no-questions-asked seven-day money-back guarantee. See seven-day guarantee for full details.
